FAQs
| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] How do I contact Honestech and/or customer care?
|
| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Where is my product key?
Your product key should be located on the CD jewel case or paper envelope that the software CD was packaged in. |
• [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] When I click on the "Register" button, the program states there is no internet connection even though it is connected.
In select cases the program will not detect an internet connection. To register the program manually, click the following link to access our online registration page.
http://www.honestech.com/main/ProductRegistration_new.asp
Select VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD from the Product drop down menu and click Submit.
After completing the registration form, you will receive an 8-digit product-registration key - please write it down. To complete the registration, select Product Registration from the (?) Help menu and click the Register button. A window will open allowing you to enter your 8-digit registration key. |
| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Can I burn HD video to DVD?
You can burn video in SD (standard resolution) format onto DVD. Due to the limitations of DVD discs, the maximum resolution for DVD is 720x480 NTSC (or 720x576 PAL). Unfortunately HD video exceeds the resolutions for DVD discs. |
| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Do I need to connect my USB 2.0 capture box before or after the software installation?
Neither, the VHS to DVD™ installer will prompt you to connect the device near the end of the installation process. |
• [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] What do the error messages “No capture device connected” or “unable to initialize capture device” mean?
This is an indication that your VIDBOX drivers are corrupted. We recommend that you remove and reinstall the VIDBOX device drivers using the steps below:
- Unplug the VIDBOX
- Go to add/remove programs (start->control panel->add/remove programs), select the VIDBOX (if present), and choose to remove it.
- Download the latest driver from the following web link, making sure to select the appropriate driver for your model/version of the VIDBOX capture device.
http://honestech.com/main/DriverUpdates.asp
- Install the driver
- Plug the VIDBOX into a different USB port
*(After plugging in, you will need to wait for the Hardware Wizard to start on your computer - if this does not occur then there is a connection problem and you may need to try plugging the device into another USB port)*
Due to the increasing driver installations for Microsoft Windows products and software, it is possible that a driver conflict may exist between the capture box and other devices that may be installed on your computer. In the event that the above steps do not resolve your issue, please contact our support staff. |
| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Why does my captured video look squished?
This may be because the video you are capturing is in the 16:9 (Widescreen) format. In Advanced Mode, use the pull-down menu in Step 1. Capture to change from 4:3 to 16:9. |
• [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] My video looks pink and green, what is wrong?
This indicates a possible USB problem. Please follow the steps below to correctly identify the USB version installed on your computer:
- Click the Start button and select Run
- Type “devmgmt.msc” and click OK.
- Click on the "+" next to Universal Serial Bus controllers
- 4. Look to see if any of the controllers listed include the word "Enhanced" or "2.0".
If you do not see the word "Enhanced" or "2.0" listed, this would indicate that your computer does not have a USB 2.0 controller card installed. USB 2.0 is required for proper video transfer. To correct this issue, a USB 2.0 card will need to be installed in your computer.
If you do see "Enhanced" or "2.0", please make sure you have your USB 2.0 capture device connected directly to your computer and not through a USB hub or USB extension cable. |
• [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Why does my video drop frames while recording in VHS to DVD™?
If your video is dropping frames, please try the following:
- Close other programs you may have running in the background and keep the VHS to DVD™ 5.0 program open and in the foreground while you are capturing.
- Lower your capture resolution
- Easy Wizard Mode: Select the Lower Recording Resolution checkbox in Step 4. Record Setting.
- Advanced Mode: Select the Record Settings button in the Capture screen and then the Settings button next to the Format option.
- Make sure your VIDBOX is connected directly to your computer and not through a USB hub or USB extension cable.
|
| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Why can’t I hear my LPs as I'm recording?
Many turntables are not able to amplify the signal on their own. Those turntables without built in amplification will need to be plugged into a stereo receiver/amplifier to boost the audio to a listening level.
The outputs from the stereo receiver/amplifier can then be plugged into the VHS to DVD™ capture device for recording purposes.
If your stereo receiver/amplifier does not have any RCA outputs, you may need to use the headphone jack. |
• [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Why is my color VHS tape in black & white?
You may need to adjust the video standard (format) setting of the Windows operating system if you are attempting to convert video originally recorded or created in another country.
To change the video standard setting for Windows, use the following steps to access the 'Change Video Standard' application that installed with the VHS to DVD™ 5.0 software.
- Click the Windows Start Menu in the bottom left corner of your screen and select “All Programs”.
- From your programs list, move your cursor over the honestech VHS to DVD™ listing and select ‘ChangeVideoStandard.exe’ from the flyout window.
Once launched, select the Video format that your video was originally recorded or created in (typically based on the country of origin). Please make sure to click the 'Change' button before pressing OK at the bottom.
If the video continues to remain in black & white after using the ' Change Video Standard' application, you may also need to adjust the video standard setting within the VHS to DVD™ software.
To do that, you will need to open the Options button within the Advanced Mode and click the Setting button next to Video Device at top. Next select the Control button and adjust the Video Standard setting within the next window that appears. Typically you will use the same setting that you used with the ' Change Video Standard' application. |
• [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] My Black and White Video Doesn't Record
If you are having trouble getting your recording to begin, and are recording a black and white video, please try these steps:
- Click on the Start menu and find the honestech VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD folder in your All Programs listing.
- Inside the folder locate and open the 'ChangeVideoStandard.exe' item.
- Uncheck "Check for video signal", and click 'OK'. Re-open VHS to DVD™ 5.0 and try your recording again.
If you are experiencing problems recording black and white video, please try these steps:
- Click the Windows Start Menu in the bottom left corner of your screen and select ‘All Programs’.
- From your programs list, move your cursor over the honestech VHS to DVD™ listing and select ‘ChangeVideoStandard.exe’ from the flyout window.
- From the Change Video Standard window, uncheck the option “Check for video signal” at the bottom and click OK. Re-open VHS to DVD™ 5.0 and try your recording again.

| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Why do I get a "There is no clip" error message when attempting to burn a DVD ?
This message indicates you have not added your clip to the Burn menu.
To burn a recorded video in the Burn section of the Advanced Mode, you will need to drag your video clip from the File Pool on the right into the Burn Menu, where it says "Drag and drop video clip here to burn". |
• [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Why do I get a Burning Failed (SenseKey error), when burning?
ERROR CODE: SenseKey(X), ASC:(X), ASCQ:(X)
SenseKey errors typically indicate that there was a burn failure, and can be a symptom of several different issues. Because SenseKey error codes are generated by the DVD drive, the actual code meanings can only be obtained from the drive manufacturer.
In an effort to cover every possibility, we recommend you follow the steps listed below to prevent future SenseKey errors:
- Download and install the latest software update for the program - http://www.honestech.com/main/SoftwareUpdates.asp
- Check for DVD drive firmware updates from the manufacturers website. -Optical drive (CD/DVD ROM/Writer) manufacturers are constantly updating their firmware and/or drivers to make their hardware more compatible with blank media(CD/DVDs) from various manufacturers.
- Turn off any software you may have running in the background such as Anti-Virus or Spy-Ware.
- Try burning with a different brand of DVD media (discs) and also different format (+R or ?R). -Many DVD burners are limited to using certain DVD formats and disc speeds, you may need to check the DVD drive manual, box or manufacturer's website for exact specifications.
- Set a slower burn speed using the Advanced Mode. (This option is just below the drive setting in the upper right corner of the Option window that appears after clicking the burn button. It is typically a number followed by an ‘x’)
|
| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Can I convert my 8mm video tapes with VHS to DVD™?
Yes, VHS to DVD™ will allow you to record almost any type of video as long as you are able to connect your video playing device to the included capture device via RCA (phono) or S-Video connectors. |
| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Where does VHS to DVD™ store video files on my computer?
If you are using the Advanced Mode, VHS to DVD™ will store all video files to the following default directory:
XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\VHS to DVD
Vista: C:\Users\\Documents\VHS to DVD
The default ‘save’ directory can be customized by changing the 'Output Folder' setting located in the "Record Settings" section of the Capture Screen.
The Easy Wizard Mode captures video to a temporary storage folder which is emptied upon completion of each recording. |
| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] What is a project file?
A project file is a small shortcut file that points the VHS to DVD™ program to your saved work (videos, edits, titles, chapters etc.).
A project file will not contain your actual videos, edits etc.., but instead provides a reference to your files, their location on your drive and any editing that may have been saved within that particular project. |
| • [VHS to DVD™ 5.0 HD] Do I have to perform "Merge and Save" after editing my video in the Edit Section?
No, If you prefer, simply drag and drop your "Edited Clip" in the burn section and begin burning. The rendering will then take place just before burning to the disc, as a one-step process.
Note: When doing this, the burning process may take up to several hours. |
