If you receive these messages after installing your VHS to DVD software, you may need to download and install the latest device driver for your VIDBOX (USB capture device) from our <Driver Updates> page.
To determine which driver you need, please check the label on the bottom of your VIDBOX device. Line 2 should tell you the basic model number.
If you have one of the following issues, please contact Honestech's customer care team (support@honestech.com; 1-877-484-6246) for possible capture device replacement. If the capture device is determined to be defective and within the warranty period, we may be able to provide a replacement.
Various video/audio issue due to insufficient power on computers with AMD processor
Discoloration on the top of the video
Please make sure that your product is registered before contacting Honestech's customer care.
This is an indication that your VIDBOX drivers are missing or corrupted. We recommend that you remove and reinstall the VIDBOX device drivers using the steps below:
Unplug the VIDBOX from your PC.
Go to add/remove programs (start->control panel->add/remove programs), select the VIDBOX (if present), and choose to remove it.
Download the latest driver from our drivers update webpage via the link below, making sure to select the appropriate driver for your model/version of the VIDBOX capture device. http://www.honestech.com/main/support_driver.asp
Install/Run the driver. When complete the installer should prompt you to restart your computer, indicating the driver has been installed completely.
Upon restart, plug the VIDBOX into a different USB port.
Due to the increasing driver installations for Microsoft Windows products and software, it is possible that a driver conflict may exist between the capture box and other devices that may be installed on your computer. In the event that the above steps do not resolve your issue, please contact our support staff.
Please make sure that the RCA/composite (yellow, red & white) cables are plugged into the VIDEO OUT and AUDIO OUT ports on the back of your VCR. The ports on the front are generally for input.
Additional notes:
- DVD/VHS combo player users: The S-Video connection on DVD/VHS combo players are generally for DVD player side only. We recommend that you use RCA/composite (yellow, red & white) cables. Some DVD/VHS combo players may have separate Video/Audio Out ports for DVD and VHS.
- TV/VCR combo devices generally do not have VIDEO/AUDIO OUT ports and cannot send video/audio signal. Please refer to your TV/VCRs for additional documentation
- Video editing is a very processor-intensive task. Having too many clips in the Storyboard may cause the program to respond slowly. It is recommended that no more than 10 clips be added to the Storyboard at one time (depending on the CPU - more or less than 10 may apply).
- Yes. When you capture/record video in the Advanced Mode, videos are automatically saved in the default output folder (a VHS to DVD folder inside your Documents folder).
- Out of sync audio may simply be a result of processor delay when recording and playing back simultaneously. However, the output video or DVD should play back the video and audio in sync. To verify the audio is truly out of sync, we recommend you record a small video sample in the Advanced mode, and playback it back in the edit section after recording.
You can burn HD video in SD (standard resolution) format onto a DVD. Due to the limitations of DVD discs, the maximum resolution for DVD is 720x480 NTSC (or 720x576 PAL). Unfortunately HD video exceeds the resolution limitations of DVD discs.
Neither, the VHS to DVD program will prompt you to connect the device when preparing to record your video. (When using the Advanced mode, it is recommended that you connect the device before starting the program)
This may be because the video you are capturing is in the 16:9 (Widescreen) format. In the Easy mode, select Widescreen (16:9) at the bottom of step 4. In the Advanced Mode, use the pull-down menu in the Capture screen to change from 4:3 to 16:9.
This indicates a possible USB problem. Please follow the steps below to correctly identify the USB version installed on your computer:
Click the Start button and select Run
Type "devmgmt.msc" and click OK.
Click on the "+" next to Universal Serial Bus controllers
Look to see if any of the controllers listed include the word "Enhanced" or "2.0".
If you do not see the word "Enhanced" or "2.0" listed, this would indicate that your computer does not have a USB 2.0 controller card installed. USB 2.0 is required for proper video transfer. To correct this issue, a USB 2.0 card will need to be installed in your computer.
If you do see "Enhanced" or "2.0", please make sure you have your USB 2.0 capture device connected directly to your computer and not through a USB hub or USB extension cable.
Many turntables are not able to amplify the signal on their own. Those turntables without built in amplification will need to be plugged into a stereo receiver/amplifier to boost the audio to a listening level. The outputs from the stereo receiver/amplifier can then be plugged into the VHS to DVD capture device for recording purposes.
If your stereo receiver/amplifier does not have any composite/RCA outputs, you may need to use the headphone jack.
You may need to adjust the video standard (format) setting of the Windows operating system if you are attempting to convert video originally recorded or created in another country.
To change the video standard setting for Windows, use the following steps to access the 'Change Video Standard' application that installed with the VHS to DVD 4.0 software.
Click the Windows Start Menu in the bottom left corner of your screen and select "All Programs".
From your programs list, move your cursor over the honestech VHS to DVD 7.0 listing and select 'Change Video Standard' from the fly-out window.
Once launched, select the Video format that your video was originally recorded or created in (typically based on the country of origin). Please make sure to click the 'Change' button before pressing OK at the bottom.
If the video continues to remain in black & white after using the 'Change Video Standard' application, you may also need to adjust the video standard setting within the VHS to DVD software.
To do that, you will need to open the Record Settings (gears) button at the bottom of the Capture screen in the Advanced Mode and click the Settings button next to the Video Device at top. Next select the Control button and adjust the Video Standard setting within the next window that appears. Typically you will use the same setting that you used in the 'Change Video Standard' application.
If you are having trouble getting your recording to begin, and are recording a black and white video, please try these steps:
Select the 'All Programs' option from your Windows Start menu, and locate the honestech VHS to DVD Deluxe item.
Hover your mouse over the 'honestech VHS to DVD 7.0' listing and select 'Change Video Standard' from the fly-out window.
At the bottom of the Change Video Standard utility you will find a check box for 'Check for video signal', please uncheck this box and click the OK button.
This message indicates you have not added your clip to the Burn menu.
To burn a recorded video in the Burn section of the Advanced Mode, you will need to drag your video clip from the Clip Panel on the right into the Burn Menu, where it says "Drag and drop video clip here to burn".
ERROR CODE: SenseKey(X), ASC:(X), ASCQ: (X)
SenseKey errors typically indicate that there was a burn failure, and can be a symptom of several different issues. Because SenseKey error codes are generated by the DVD drive, the actual code meanings can only be obtained from the drive manufacturer.
In an effort to cover every possibility, we recommend you follow the steps listed below to prevent future SenseKey errors:
Check for DVD drive firmware updates from the manufacturers website.
Optical drive (CD/DVD ROM/Writer) manufacturers are constantly updating their firmware and/or drivers to make their hardware more compatible with blank media(CD/DVDs) from various manufacturers.
Turn off any software you may have running in the background such as Anti-Virus or Spy-Ware.
Try burning with a different brand of DVD media (discs) and also different format (+R or –R).
Many DVD burners are limited to using certain DVD formats and disc speeds, you may need to check the DVD drive manual, box or manufacturer's website for exact specifications.
Set a slower burn speed using the Advanced Mode. (This option is just below the drive setting in the upper right corner of the Option window that appears after clicking the burn button. It is typically a number followed by an 'x')
Yes, VHS to DVD will allow you to record almost any type of video as long as you are able to connect your video playing device to the included capture device via composite /RCA or S-Video connectors.
If you are using the Advanced Mode, VHS to DVD will store all video files to the following default directory:
XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\My Documents\VHS to DVD
7: C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\VHS to DVD
The default ‘output’ directory can be customized by changing the 'Output Folder' setting located under the "Record Settings" (gears) button at the bottom of the Capture Screen.
The Easy Wizard Mode captures video to a temporary storage folder which is emptied upon completion of each recording.
Yes, the VHS to DVD software is capable of recording both NTSC and PAL formats however, you may need to use our Change Video Standard application to adjust the video standard (format) setting in Windows. This helps Windows to accept and understand the PAL video signal.
Please let us know if you encounter a problem recording your PAL tapes and we can provide further information on how to use the Change Video Standard application.
A project file is a small shortcut file that saves your progress in the VHS to DVD program.
A project file will not contain your actual videos, edits etc.., but instead points the VHS to DVD program to any saved work (videos, edits, titles, chapters etc.), and their location on your hard drive.
